About Mathletics

 What is the Mathletics Competition?

Mathletics is a math contest held annually to encourage excellence in mathematics and recognize the achievement of individual students and the schools they represent. Mathletics is made possible by the generosity of donations and is organized mainly by volunteer teachers and students from the participating schools and the mathematics department from California State University Monterey Bay.  The event is coordinated by the Monterey County Office of Education Mathematics Department.

Who can participate?

The Mathletics Competition is open to any Monterey County upper elementary, middle or high school.  Competing students must be sponsored by their school team and be accompanied by a coach.  Students and parents cannot register themselves. Teams are limited to 3 students for one category. Cost is $100 per team (of 3 students), which includes student lunches.  Coaches register for free with an optional $10 per coach lunch. Coaches may register multiple teams, but we kindly request that you keep in mind you are expected to support with supervision of your students during lunch rotations.  Multiple teams are allowed, as we want to encourage open student participation in this unique county wide event and not exclude interested students.

How are the exams scored?

Exams are scored during the lunch rotations. Each exam consists of two sections: multiple select and free response.  For the multiple select section, there may be more than 1 correct answer, so students should mark all that apply.  The answer for one problem may include A, B, and D. For every correct answer the student will earn 1 point. For every incorrect answer, the student will lose a portion of a point. The free response section is dependent on category and exam writers' discretion/rubrics.

Note: the pilot categories will be scored on 2 rubrics. A collaborative rubric as well as a rubric to score the mathematics and justification of the team's solution.

What awards are given?

Both Individual and team awards are given and announced at the awards ceremony by category.  Individuals are recognized as 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, and honorable mentions.  Teams are awarded 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place teams. Lastly, the Richard Morgantini Scholarship is awarded to the highest scoring senior in the Calculus BC category and - NEW - Robert P. Balles Scholarships are awarded to the highest scoring Calculus BC team and the highest scoring AP Statistics team. Note that individual scores/results are not released.
